Players to Watch
OL Sam Gardner (6-0, 205, sr.), OL Mike Tozzi (6-2, 225, sr.), RB Jack Campbell (5-10, 190, jr.), QB Tommy Iammarino (5-11, 195, jr.), RB/DB Bradley Munday (5-8, 155, jr.), WR Mike Hageman (6-5, 205, sr.), WR Anthony DeCamillo (6-1, 200, sr.), LB Kurt Vidmer (6-0, 205, sr.), DB Everett Dishong (6-0, 195, sr.), LB Andrew Winkleman (6-2, 200, sr.)

Outlook
The Tigers are suddenly a legit football power and they’re nowhere near done making noise. The question is can they make that noise in D-III. Chagrin Falls has been to two straight D-IV state championship games. Head coach Mark Iammarino (119-59 in 17 years) welcomes back six starters on offense and five on defense, including the team’s top four tacklers (Vidmer, Dishong, Campbell, Winkleman). Although all three LBs are back, the DL is an area of concern as all 4 positions must be replaced. Offensively, Campbell was the team’s leading rusher (696 yards and five TDs) last year, and Vidmer (10 TDs) played a huge part in short yardage packages. Returning QB Tommy Iammarino welcomes back three seasoned receivers (Munday, DeCamillo, Hageman) as well.

Players to Watch
ATH/LB Kyle Schinke (6-1, 190, sr.), RB/LB Lou Vettel (5-11, 175, sr.), LB Steve Freiberg (5-9, 180, sr.), LB Evan Gormley (6-0, 185, sr.), DB Ryan Fyffe (5-11, 175, sr.), WR/DB Richie Miller (6-2, 175, sr.), WR/DB Aaron Phillips (6-1, 175, sr.), WR/DB Zach Hawkins (6-2, 195, sr.), QB John Stepec (6-3, 215, jr.)

Outlook
The Cougars have won back-to-back regional titles under head coach Mike Bell (76-36 in nine years) but stretching that streak to three will be tough. MLC must replace 21 of 22 starters. Only one player (Vettel) who ran for over 100 total yards returns. Defensively, Schinke (47 tackles, nine TFL) and Freiberg (35 tackles, five TFL) are back. Despite the graduation losses, Bell says, “I really believe this has been our best overall off season. The players are working extremely hard, they have shown tremendous leadership and have very high expectations for the 2011 season.” New teams on the MLC schedule include: Strongsville, Ravenna and Avon. This is the 40th season of football for MLC.

Outlook
After being an independent the Preppers join the Premier Athletic Conference this season. Head coach Jim Stephens (12 years at the school) returns a ton of experience from a roster that made the playoffs last season with just six seniors. Eden (2,253 passing yards, 22 TDs, 542 rushing yards, seven TDs) and McKelvey (2,000 all-purpose yards, 22 TDs) lead a very strong senior class.

Players to Watch
WR/DB Jarrod Wilson (6-3, 190, sr.)

Outlook
The Griffins made headlines last year by finishing state runner-up and then made headlines in the offseason with some transfer issues and ineligible players. Now it’s time to play football again. Head coach Ricky Powers welcomes back some talent from last year’s squad including Wilson (55 tackles, eight INTs and seven TFL), a Michigan commit who chose the Wolverines over Notre Dame, Penn State, Stanford, Michigan State and Vanderbilt. Wilson had two INTs and a fumble recovery in the state final last year.

Official Mooney Football Website

The Mooney football tradition is one of the strongest in Ohio and has seen some of its most successful seasons in the past decade. The Cardinals come into week eight with a 4-2 record, but their record cannot be overlooked because their two losses have come to Divison III front-runner Mentor Lake Catholic and defending Division I State Champion St. Edward. Mooney always plays a brutal schedule and this year is no different.

Mooney as always relies on a strong and ball controlling running game along with a disciplined and well-coached defense. The Cardinals have only lost to St. Vincent-St. Mary once out of the 20 times that these two schools have met on the gridiron and that was in 1988 in the state playoffs. The Irish and the Cardinals have played in some instant classics in the past decade, but Mooney has found a way to win each of these games.

This year's game will prove to be another great matchup. Make sure to get to the stadium early - parking will be scarce since it's STVM's "CYO Night" and there will no doubt be a sellout, standing room-only crowd at the game.

Coaching Staff:
P.J. Fecko, head coach (12th season, 102-36). Assistants: Chris Amill, Tom Velasquez, Brendan McCloud, John D’Apolito, Pat Kelley, Mark Lyden, Greg Giannios, Paul Palumbo, Mike Lodyn, Joe Caruso.

History:
24 years, 51-17. Last appearance, 2010.

Outlook:
A handful of two-year lettermen will be the leaders of this Mooney club — RB/DB Roosevelt Griffin, FB/LB Billy Stana, and OL/DLs Austin Trgovich and Troy Ferris. P.J. Quinn is the heir apparent at QB, and WR Marcus McWilson is a big-play threat. Courtney Love and Kareem Ellis are underclassmen who could make an impact.

Our team has a lot of intelligence and athleticism, but we are lacking in experience. Outlook
The Knights have high expectations for 2011 but they also have a brutal schedule ahead, including games with: Hartley, SVSM, Massillon Washington, Walsh Jesuit, Mentor Lake Catholic and Padua Franciscan. To help offset that gauntlet, head coach Ralph Orsini (128-66 in 18 years) welcomes back the best DL duo in Ohio in Lewis and McMullen. Lewis (88 tackles, 31 QB hurries, eight sacks) lists his Top 5 schools as Ohio State, Nebraska, Oregon, Northwestern and Michigan. McMullen (86 tackles, 20 QB hurries, 7.5 sacks) is a Nebraska commit. Cook (54 tackles), Hodoh (50 tackles) and Brett (24 tackles) add to a formidable Hoban defense. Offensively, several key lineman return. Look for Dominick Orsini and Martter to have big years.

Opp. Scouting Report:

STRENGTHS: The Panthers have depth and talent at skill positions. Three tailbacks are expected to share the load — De'Andre Rollins, Joe Greene and Melvin King. Last year, Rollins averaged 7 yards per carry.Quarterback Benny Walker started the final five games of last season. He threw for over 500 yards. He is more confident this year and ready to take on a leadership role. "The game has slowed down for me," he said. "I'm more confident. It's my senior year and I want to have a successful season." The Panthers also have a strong junior class.

WEAKNESSES: Lack of depth on the offensive line. Defensively, the Panthers have three returning starters in De'Andre Rollins, Juwan Ford and Houston Boone. On the bright side, Rollins is the team's top-returning tackler. He had 91 tackles last year.

WHOM TO FOLLOW: Benny Walker has been playing quarterback since seventh grade. He returns with varsity experience and the confidence that comes with it. "He had a great summer throwing the football," Gibbons said. "We are real excited about the prospects of what he can do to open up the offense." De'Andre Rollins is a two-year starting TB/OLB. He's a big, athletic player who has the ability to make key plays. "He's a work horse," Gibbons said. "He will be counted on offensively and defensively."

UNDERCLASSMAN TO WATCH: Matt Blaha is a big, powerful left guard at 6-foot-4, 350 pounds.

STATUS: IF ... the Panthers' skill-position players can perform at the top of their game week after week ... THEN ... the team can improve on last year's 4-6 record.

Players Committed: Ben Onett (Temple); Devin Williams (Stanford)

Players Receiving Interest: Mitch Kirsch (Offer: James Madison, Interest: Vanderbilt, BC, UVA); Olajuwon Swearinger (Offer: Youngstown State); Zach Quarles (Offer: Bucknell, Interest: Old Dominion, Richmond); Omar Truitt (Interest: Maryland, Tennessee, Vanderbilt); Will Ulmer (Interest: Old Dominion, Syracuse, West Virginia

Strengths: St. John’s has a lot of returning talent this year. Their offensive line has four returning starters coming back. All-Conference player, Mitch Kirsch, will anchor the line. Edward Bent, Alex Malchow and Max Onyenwe will also return to make up one of the stronger lines in the conference

St. John’s has a plethora of players who can excel at the quarterback position, but the player most likely to see the majority of the snaps is Ben Onett. The former Central Catholic (Mass.) and DeMatha 1uarterback should come in right away and give the Cadets a strong, experienced arm behind center. Will Ulmer will also see time behind center. He is less experienced but every bit as athletic. Omar Truitt could also see some time at QB in certain packages this season.

Troy Robinson will get the majority of the carries from the running back position. He is big, athletic and should turn a lot of heads in the conference this year. The receivers will be Billy Webb and Omar Truitt, who are both speedy guys with good hands.

Senior DE Olajuwon Swearinger anchors the defense. An All-Conference performer last year, Swearinger should be even better this year. Edward Bent will also be a strong contributor to the defensive line.

Devin Williams is a standout at LB. He should rack up a ton of tackles this year. Skylar Lee will also be a strong member of the linebacker core.

The secondary is lead by Zach Quarles and Omar Truitt. These two will go a long way in shutting down opposing receivers. Billy Webb and James Manuel will also see time in the secondary.

Weaknesses: This team is really young. Coach Patterson said, “Our biggest weakness is that we have a lot of sophomores starting.” The inexperience of the team could hurt them in close games and come playoffs. Most of the inexperience is at the skill positions on both sides of the ball.

The overall depth could be a weakness for St. Johns as the season moves forward.

Buzz: This team may be one of the youngest in the conference, but there is plenty of talent to make up for it

The big question for St. John’s is, can they get over the hump and finally win a WCAC Championship? When asked that question Coach Patterson responded, “What hurt us in the past is injuries. We haven’t had the necessary depth to overcome those injuries. Ultimately, it is going to come down to playmakers coming forth and making big plays.”

“We just want to go out and play every game as if we are going to win. But we definitely have the expectation of making the championship game."

Outlook:
The Warriors return six starters on offense and five on defense. “I think our strength is good senior leadership and good work ethic,” Rardin said. “Our weakness is lack of depth on the offensive and defensive line. It all starts with the quarterback on offense and we expect Nick Wargo to have a real good year. We will rotate three kids at the running back position; Brock Jones, Ryan Jun and Louis Hill. Our three receivers — Crissean Caver, Doug Lewis and Kevin Enright — are all very capable receivers. They all have good speed and good hands.” Jun is also a leader on defense with senior captains O’Driscoll and Donald.
