From the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

What, when, where: Division III state semifinal, 7 p.m., Massillon High, Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, 1 Paul Brown Drive, Massillon. Call 330-830-3901.

Records: Both teams are 11-2.

What to watch: The sky. It will be filled with footballs, as both squads rely heavily on the pass. Dover QB Mason Mamarella is a dual-threat, as he has passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 30 touchdowns and rushed for almost 1,200 yards and 11 scores. He has been able to spread the wealth, as receivers Cory Contini, Trey Wallick, Brant Raber and Jonathan Fell have at least 30 receptions each, with Contini and Wallick leading the way with 69 and 44, respectively. The Tornadoes, in the state semifinals for the first time after reaching the playoffs 16 times, forced six turnovers in last week's 48-21 regional final win against Millersburg West Holmes. That is something the Irish will need to keep in mind. While QB Clayton Uecker might not have Mamarella's stable of go-to guys, he has the outstanding tandem of Jordan Hargrove (66 receptions for 1,067 yards and 13 touchdowns) and Fransohn Bickley (46 receptions, 1,013 yards, 12 touchdowns), as well as a solid running game with Parris Campbell Jr., Vince Lockett and Mike Priuett. Combined, that trio has rushed for 35 touchdowns and more than 2,100 yards, with Campbell on top with 1,041 yards and 21 scores on 136 carries. Uecker has emerged as a college prospect by completing 61 percent of his passes for 2,712 yards and 30 touchdowns. His 12 interceptions are a concern, however. The SVSM defense, led by linebackers Newman Williams, Dante Booker and Lockett, and the front line of twins Anthony and Aaron Adkins, Eric Prologo and Travonte Junius, has held playoff opponents to two touchdowns per game.

Preview (FridayNightOhio.com)
Massillon’s defensive secondary will be tested. The Irish have two capable WRs in Jordan Hargrove and Fransohn Bickley, who combined for 1,743 receiving yards a year ago. Bickley has three TD catches of 89 yards or longer this season, including a school-record 95-yarder. He also has punt return TDs of 82 and 65 yards this fall. Hargrove scored 13 TDs a year ago and has SV-SM’s all-time top two single-game reception totals. Massillon defenders Gareon Conley and Brody Tonn are capable of guarding both, but there will be times when SV-SM pops a big play. This is the first of two tests for the secondary. Next week they have Jeff Richardson and Terrance Burt for McKinley. SV-SM’s other top playmakers are RB Parris Campbell Jr. and QB Clayton Uecker. Massillon’s offense has played very well as of late. QB Kyle Kempt is having an outstanding senior season. He has thrown for 1,884 yards and is completing 72 percent of his passes. He has 19 TDs and just four interceptions. The more Massillon can get the ball to Conley vertically and Ryne Moore in the running game, the better off it will be. This is a tough opponent on paper and the Irish have been in the playoffs the last three years, but SV-SM has only one win against an opponent with a winning record (Woodridge 6-2) this season. The Irish lost to Mooney 41-15. Outside of those two games, they have outscored opponents with a 10-37 record by a combined 309-64.

Outlook
The Magics are bigger, faster and stronger after a good offseason, although the numbers are down because of pay-to-play. There is a good core of talent with Lance Anderson, Corey Fox, Joshua Williams, Jerry Williams and Aaron Tschantz. In the Magics’ second season as an independent team, the schedule will be challenging with perennial playoff contenders New Philadelphia, Canton Central Catholic and St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Often refered to as the "Akron Holy War," this rivalry between the Fighting Irish of STVM and the Knights of Hoban has always been proven to be a game to remember year in and year out. Throw the records out the door in this one because no matter what each team has done prior to this matchup, the game seems to always come down to the last play.

In 1996, this rivalry was renewed after a 20 year lapse from playing each other. Since the rivalry was renewed in 1996, the teams faced off at the Rubber Bowl until it closed its gates in 2008. Since 2009, the Irish and the Knights have been playing in the University of Akron's new on-campus stadium, InfoCision Stadium. Each year they draw a huge crowd of people from throughout Northeastern Ohio. The winner of this rivalry gains possession of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Shillelagh trophy as well as bragging rights throughout the year.

Outlook
The Knights struggled last season and look to rebound this season with 31 returning lettermen. Eight starters are back on offense and seven on defense. “The big key for us is to not make mistakes. That hurt us a lot last year,” Orsini said. “You could go back on our games and just about every game except for one or two, we made too many mistakes or didn’t make enough plays. We just had one of the those years where injuries piled up on us and we just had a difficult time doing what we had done in the past to succeed.” Orsini said he has seen progress in summer practices and is anxious for the season to begin. Martter, Dominick Orsini, Cianciola, Brett and Abernathy will lead the Knights.

Youngstown WKBN Scouting Report:

Cardinal Mooney began 2011 with a 2-2 record following back to back losses to St. Edward (34-17) and Lake Catholic (27-22). The Cardinals went onto win nine of their last ten games which included a 21-14 victory over Shawnee in the Division III State Championship game on December 2 at Fawcett Stadium. Mooney knocked off five double-digit win teams en route to their eighth state crown. Coach P.J. Fecko gained his fourth title tying the Cardinals’ longtime leader Don Bucci for the most championships by a head coach in the area.

“Obviously we were excited about winning the state finals last year,” states Fecko. “But it’s past us. Nothing from last year is going to help you (this season). It’s a new set of players. It’s a new schedule. Everything is brand new and everybody is zero-zero.”

Nebraska head coach and former Cardinal Mooney graduate Bo Pelini snagged both Marcus McWilson and Courtney Love this off-season to verbal commitments. McWilson put up staggering numbers as a junior - averaging 8.3 yards per carry (44 carries, 367 yards), gaining 153 yards on 9 catches, returned 29.7 stripes on kickoffs and 31.7 on punts. Number 4 was also the team's punter (39.4 average) while intercepting 6 balls on defense and scoring a total of 10 touchdowns. Love was Division III's Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2011. Courtney led the team in tackles and defensive stops for a loss.

Coach Fecko has a stable of running backs to go along with McWilson. Justus Ellis-Moore and Mark Handel should see a lot of hand offs this year. Ellis-Moore will most likely take over for the graduating Roosevelt Griffin, who rushed for 1,514 yards and 17 scores, as the Cardinals' main rusher this season. The junior Handel tallied 112 yards on 22 carries (5.1 ypc) in 6 games played.

Mooney will need to replace the leadership that P.J. Quinn displayed last season. Quinn completed 60.3% (76-126) for 1,255 yards and 11 touchdowns. There were only two other passing attempts throughout the entire season which weren't thrown by Quinn (Denver Martin & Quincy Jones). Mooney has a collection of players competing for the field general position this summer. “We have five potential guys who could win the starting role,” indicates Coach Fecko.

Senior wide out Quincy Jones is the Cards' leading returning receiver in catches (17), yards (327), and touchdowns (4). Last year Mooney averaged 90.6 receiving yards per game; however, it was the Cardinals' running game which is their bread and butter as they posted 261.1 stripes on the ground.

Mooney’s schedule is once again one of the most difficult in the state. Six of the nine match ups are against Division I programs while five opponents advanced to the post-season (St. Ignatius, Boardman, Lake Catholic, St. Vincent-St. Mary, St. Edward). Fecko is quick to point out the impact playing this type of competition can have on a team. “It’s definitely a big part of our success. Our guys are excited to go compete at that level.” The Cardinals open their season at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday, August 25 against St. Ignatius.

Outlook
Woodridge, a top contender in the division, will have to overcome a new pay-to-play system. Coach Eric Ervin says about 20 kids dropped football this summer.
“We feel good about the guys we have,” he said. “The players that are here are here, we’re not worried about the guys who aren’t, quite frankly. Last year, we’d consider it a down year, but we have a lot of experience returning. Our record of 5-5 in the 1990s was a great year, but for us, it was a setback.”

Outlook
The Warriors return five starters on offense and four on defense. “I think the positives are that at every offensive and defensive position, we have a couple of returning starters,” Rardin said. “That always helps. The other kids that will fill in around them will benefit from their experience. Doug Lewis is one of the captains and he is going to be a leader on both sides of the ball. Sam Karam is a returning starter at center and is also a captain.” Walsh looks to build off last season’s momentum of winning two Division II state playoff games before bowing out in a regional final. “What was exciting about last year was the improvement the team made each and every week,” Rardin said. “That was really neat to see.”
