Jim Meyer
returned to his alma mater in 1996 as head football coch, succeeding
his former coach, John Cistone. Jim graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School in 1973 and was a 1972 State Champion. He played football
at the University of Akron where he earned his Bachelor of Science and
Master of Science Degrees in Physical Education. He played football
while in college and was a captain of the 1976 National Runner-Up team
in Division II.
He began his coaching career at Central-Hower High School in 1978 as
the defensive coordinator. He then coached in several capacities for
the Canton Bulldogs semi-pro football team, Bethany College and Kenyon
College. He was the head coach at Kenyon College from 1989-1994, leading
the team to its first conference championship in its 100-year history.
He was also named Conference Coach of the Year in 1989. Prior to returning
to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Coach Meyer returned to the Akron
area in 1995 to be the defensive line coach for the University of Akron.
Coach Meyer is well remembered for his contagious, positive attitude
and his famous comment, “There’s no ‘I’ in team.”
