Former STVM Football Star Greg Thurman, 54, Passes Away
Former football standout running back and three-sport athlete, Greg Thurman, passed away Monday, January 26, 2009. This has come as a shock to the St. Vincent-St. Mary community and we express our deepest thoughts and prayers for Greg, his family and his friends.
As a member of St. Vincent-St. Mary's first state championship team in 1972, Thurman was a star running back as well as a senior captain. He currently is ninth on the list of all-time leading rushers in school history. Thurman also has the 4th longest rushing touchdown in school history at 91 yards. After graduating from St. Vincent-St. Mary, Thurman went on to have a successful football career at the University of Akron where he was named captain his senior year.
Most recently, Thurman served as the head freshman football coach for STVM and in 2007 he posted a dominant 9-1 record. In the summer of 2008, Thurman finally had his dream fulfilled - he was offered a head basketball coaching job at Canton Central Catholic. Before his passing, he posted a 7-3 record with the Crusaders and made an everlasting impression on the CCC community just as he did at St. Vincent-St. Mary.
Thurman was also a high school math teacher during his time at Walsh Jesuit, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Canton Central Catholic. He was a true educator in every sense of the word and always put his students first.
The Fighting Irish community is deeply saddened by Thurman's passing and wishes to send its condolences to any family members and friends of Greg Thurman.

An Irish Prayer
May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer
For each prayer.
Rest in Peace, Greg.

Vince Pelini - Week #7 Game Breaker - Cleveland.com
Vince Pelini was named a "Game Breaker" on Cleveland.com after
his performance in the Walsh game. The listing on Cleveland.com can
be found
here. Here is the write-up from the website:
"Pelini and the Irish found a way to beat Walsh Jesuit, making
timely plays and doing just enough to keep the Warriors guessing. Pelini
doesn't have a huge arm but he made some accurate passes and more importantly
some gutty runs, including a 17-yarder after a well-executed fake that
set up the winning touchdown. If he's steady, the Irish can play with
just about anybody."

The Fighting Irish had to battle tough weather conditions as well as
a tough atmosphere in Bellville, Ohio against the Colts of Clear Fork.

The Fighting Irish Give Back to the Community
On Friday, July 18th, STVM football players and coaches helped volunteer
a few hours out of their day to set up tables and chairs for a cancer
benefit. Stewart's
Caring Place, a local cancer wellness and educational resource center,
was putting on their annual benefit to help raise money to support families
who have a loved one living with cancer. With the help of the STVM football
players, tables and chairs were set up to seat around 400 people. Even
with the summer heat and a 7 on 7 passing scrimmage later that day,
the players understood the importance of giving back to a good cause.
